some thoughts about prisoner solidarity work

I gave some consideration to what you are saying, and came to the conclusion that I have to disagree.

Supporting our comrades by any means possible, including judicial means, serves severals purposes which are more important than symbolic boycott of the judicial system. Apart from the more obvious aspect of mutual aid, which is an essential part of any non-authoritarian society and therefore a worthy goal of itself, it clearly demonstrates and draws public attention to the fact that the State will only make the show of following its own laws when it suits its needs.

If our solidarity actions force the State to release the prisoners, our movement is strengthened by this demonstration of power of solidarity. If the State persecutes our comrades in violation of its own laws despite all the public attention we manage to draw, this serves as yet another proof that law's only purpose is oppression and not justice, which puts another crack in the public belief in the judicial system itself.

One thing I agree on is that the fight against this wave of repressions should not distract us from the other struggles we're involved with. Just by having a better look at the posts on this site you can see that we're not loosing focus: Food Not Bombs, anti-nuclear, and animal rights actions are still ongoing despite the oppression.
