hey,
i just posted the english version of chavez’s un speech on the open newswire but it’s not up yet
the spanish version was already posted here:

i think it would be an excellent feature, yes?
d.o.
chavez’ speech at the UN was great.
However, he fucked up seriously on his recent visit to Belarus – at least if mainstream media reports on what he said are close to the truth. i can understand his realpolitik motivations – armed resistance by Venezuela against a US covert or overt military action - but chavez’ comments describing Belarus as a “model social state” are probably worse anti-bolivarian-revolution propaganda for central/east europeans than any pro-US-corporate propagandists could have made themselves.

“We see here a model social state like the one we are beginning to create,” Mr Chavez said in Belarus’ capital Minsk, before his talks with Mr Lukashenko.
“Here, I’ve got a new friend and together we’ll form a team, a go-ahead team,” Mr Chavez said.

Russia plans to deliver 30 Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and 30 helicopters to Venezuela.
Venezuela also plans to buy 100,000 Russian-made AK-103 assault rifles and wants to set up factories on its soil to produce Kalashnikovs under licence.
Here’s the log from this month’s central/east european irc meeting, with a summary on the belarus situation from an imc belarus activist:

There’s also this www-features article on “The Day of Terror” – see the videos if you want to see “a model social state” in action:

i’m sure that this is not what chavez wants Venezuela to become. Either he was ignorant and naive or he was playing realpolitik, or maybe some mix of the two.
But he has probably weakened the already weak chance of central/east european activists thinking that the bolivarian revolution in Venezuela might be a good example to learn from.
This also means less chance of solidarity actions in CEEurope opposing US military actions against Venezuela.
My personal suggestion to venezuela activists who have contact with chavistas or chavez: ask him what is more important for defence of Venezuela: a handful of guns? or local and worldwide solidarity and popular support?
Also: please tell chavez the truth about Belarus. It’s anti-USA but it’s also an authoritarian, repressive state under Lukashenko.
