In the public mind, the word “fascism” is associated more with black and white photos of torchlight processions in the streets of Berlin than with contemporary events. However, this idea of total domination of the state over the individual has never been associated with regional specifics and has not been defeated in the distant past. Whether the banners of the new fascists will have swastikas or Z’s on them is not important, the aesthetics are not as important as the idea. Dreams of a strong state, subjugating society and threatening all enemies with military force, occupy the minds of both imperialists and nationalists around the world.
Europe is by no means an exception. Conservative and far-right parties have a significant number of seats in European parliaments and a visible presence on the streets. In Poland, where conservatives hold almost half the seats in parliament and every 11 November on Independence Day, the right-wing takes to the streets in a show of force. These torch processions of the present day are the brightest example of the fact that fascism does not slumber, penetrating into the minds of young people and threatening to subjugate the whole society.
Unfortunately, there are those in the Belarusian democratic movement who believe that the role of a person in society is only to hold a portrait of the leader and a torch. Supporters of the Junta openly declare their views in the mass media, are welcome guests at democratic events, and yes, are members of the “opposition parliament” – the Coordination Council. https://t.me/pramenby/5314.
As anarchists we cannot allow authoritarian tendencies in the democratic movement and the triumph of right-wing populists on the streets. Therefore, together with our comrades from other countries, we will come out on 11 November in Warsaw to counter-demonstrate against fascism of all colours and stripes.
