The Reclaim Power action started early with the various blocks (green, blue, yellow & bike) aiming to get into the COP15 negotiations to establish a People's Climate Assembly for one day. Meanwhile the inside block (or group) consisting of around 200 delegates and observers gathered in the main hall with the objective of walking out of the centre to join the People's Assembly. The outside blocks arrived at Vejlands Allé at just after midday attended by several thousand people. The inside block who marched out of the Bella Center were unable to attend due to police blocking their way: they were threatened with arrest and beaten back with batons.
Today is the first day of the ministerial phase of the COP15 summit, that so far has made little progress. The Reclaim Power! Action, aims to take over the summit for this one day to turn it into a people assembly (call for action, latest press release). Similar assemblies have already been taking place outside the UN summit for a week, as part of the Klimaforum09 people's climate summit with an estimated 25.000 people having taken part in discussions.
Multiple marches tried to make their way to the Bella Centre where the COP15 is held. The group meeting at Orestad station was surrounded by police and arrests made, but many people managed to stay free and move towards other groups. A second block, of more than 1000 people, made their way to the Bella Center whilst resisiting attempts from the police to break it. Police have been repeatedly attacking the crowds with batton charges and pepper spray, as well as arresting protesters throughout the morning. Meanwhile at the COP15 Friends of the Earth and Via Campesina were refused entry despite aquiring a second accreditaton. Some delegates staged a sit-in protest, whilst other delegates from NGOs and the Global South marched out of the Bella Center in a 200 strong demonstration but were prevented from reaching the People's Assembly by the police who used batons to repress them.
The People's Assembly between NGOs and COP15 delegates took place at midday. Activists from Climate Justice Network inside the Bella Center however have not succeeded in reaching the meeting as police with batons and pepperspray are holding them back.
